Female Beekeepers in Ethiopia

The market for Ethiopian honey is growing steadily and rapidly. The country currently belongs to the four most important suppliers of honey worldwide. The conditions for beekeeping are excellent and the practice has been part of Ethiopian culture for bimillenaries. According to statistics this East African state counts 1.8 million beekeepers. Since 90 percent of them still work with traditional methods the revenues remain low. To adress the situation, the University in Metu is one of several institutions now teaching young female students in the modern methods of beekeeping, one of the countries most promising sources of income.
